Stand Up Paddle Surfing on Vancouver Island

Jill Stefanyk

Have you ever thought about Stand Up Paddle Surfing?

Stand up paddle surfing (SUP) is becoming bigger and bigger here on Vancouver Island! I tried it for the first time in Hawaii back in 2008, known as Hoe he’e nalu in the Hawaiian language, SUP is an emerging global sport with a Hawaiian heritage.

SUP is actually an ancient form of surfing, and began as a way for surfing instructors to manage their large groups of students, they would stand on their boards to give them a higher view point of what was going on around them. Also in the early1960s, the Beach Boys would stand on their long boards and take pictures with tourists learning to surf; this is where the term “Beach Boy Surfing” came from which is also another name for Stand Up Paddle Surfing.

Ocean River Sports, located in Victoria BC is a great place to learn more about Stand Up Paddle Surfing, they not only sell boards but rent them and offer lessons. This Saturday July 10th, they are holding an ALL DAY boat, canoe and stand up paddle boards demo on the dock behind the store. If you are interested in learning more, be sure to check it out:

I will be down on Saturday to check it out, hope to see you there!
